Vetoryl for Dogs

Vetoryl Capsules are used for the treatment of pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing’s syndrome) and hyperadrenocorticism due to adrenocortical tumor in dogs. Vetoryl Capsules contain trilostane. The starting dose for the treatment of hyperadrenocorticism in dogs is 1.0-3.0 mg/lb (2.2-6.7 mg/kg) once a day. Vetoryl should be given with food. Trilostane.

What is Vetoryl used for?

How it works:
Cushing’s Disease (hyperadrenocorticism) is a condition in which too much of the hormone cortisol is produced. Cortisol is produced by the adrenal glands during times of stress. Vetoryl Capsules contain trilostane, which controls the excess production of cortisol.

What you should know:
Vetoryl will not cure Cushing’s Disease, but it will help control the symptoms associated with it. Improvement may be seen within several weeks of treatment. In most cases, therapy with Vetoryl will be necessary for the animal’s lifetime.

How to give this medication:
The starting dose for the treatment of hyperadrenocorticism in dogs is 1.0-3.0 mg/lb (2.2-6.7 mg/kg) once a day. Vetoryl should be given with food. Do not attempt to split or divide the capsules. Wash your hands after use. Do not handle this medication if you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant. Give this medication exactly as directed by your veterinarian. If you do not understand the directions, ask the veterinarian or pharmacist to explain them to you.

If you miss a dose:
If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and give the next one as directed. Do not double dose.

Vetoryl should not be used in:
Do not use Vetoryl in dogs with kidney or liver disease. Do not give to pregnant or lactating dogs, or male dogs intended for breeding.

Possible side effects:
Some patients may exhibit reactions, including allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; swelling of the lips, tongue or face; hives), severe depression, bloody diarrhea, collapse, or other severe reactions. Other less serious side effects such as unexpected decrease in appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy may occur. If you observe any of these side effects, contact your veterinarian as soon as possible.
